I’ve been reading the article on “Smart Garage Workshop…” in FW 195. I like the benchtop that also doubles as support for lumber on the chopsaw. But am curious what a good height is for the benchtop. The text only notes that the benchtop is lower than the 40″ height of the wainscoating? See pic at top of page 49. What is a good height?

The "best" height for any working surface is whatever is most comfortable for you. Most people are used to a height of ~36" (typical kitchen counter height), but an inch (or two) in either direction may work better for you.
Set up a temporary stand with the saw table at ~34" then use pieces of plywood to raise/lower the saw until you hit the height that works best for you,
