I want to buy a chop saw (compound miter) and am having a difficult time finding an article that evaluates the different brand names. Can anyone help me with this or make a reccomendation on a particular saw. I will just use it for my hobby however, I appreciate good quality tools.

There have been several test recently. If I run across one in one the mags I saw them in, I will post back. I believe the DW, Hitachi, Makita and Bosch all make an excellent saw. Go to the Amazon web-site and get in the tool section. Shop them all. Read the techs and especially read the consumer review feed-back. The four I mentioned are all excellent. Sometimes it's just a matter of small details and price that can determine which you prefer.
Good Luck...

If were talking sliders, Hitachi or Makita 10", dollar for dollar are hard to beat. Never mind the lasers, as mentioned on another post, too fuzzy, about as accurate as a chalk line. Now if my 8 1/2" Hitachi slider would ever die, I could upgrade to one of the above mentioned saws! The Makita is smoother, but the Hitachi "just feels right". I don't think that you could go wrong with either. As far as the 12"ers go, the expense is difficult to justify, and there is no added benefit, except that you get to buy more expensive blades and move a bigger saw! That being said, again I would go for the Hitachi or Makita. The Bosch is nice, but complex, the DW has IMHO always suffered from a slight side to side deflection, probably due to their "over and under" rail setup. I noticed that they have abandoned that system on their new 8 1/2". I like the engineering if the Rigid 12", but I do not buy tools from HD and who knows if they will be around in years to come. So that's my two cents!
Good Luck!

Erv,
I bought a new compound miter saw about a year ago to replace my 25 yr old Sears. This was not a slider. Since then I have used it about 6 times. I tend to use my Incra miter in the TS most often for accurate cuts and the compound miter for thicker wood...such as squaring up legs, etc. I bought a Delta on sale for $99 from a big box store....it's okay..and the blade is good. I just find too little use for these things....
