In FWW #211 (April 2010) there’s a spread on panels, and on p52 Christian Becksvoort shows a routed panel – routing a series of curves from each side to produce a very interesting latticed look.
I’m curious if this technique would work on a high quality 3/4″ plywood panel for a painted piece? I’m sure I’ll end up giving it a try anyway but am curious of others have tried it yet.

Never tried it but by looking at grooves and dados I make in cabinet grade plywood I think the result would be less than acceptable. With the cross grain plys there's always a fair bit of fuzz. Also consider that plywood has voids that might show up in the finished panel. MDF would be my preferred choice for man made material for this application.

Let us know.
A couple of trial straight cuts in a scrap of plywood and you will know if it's going to work. Let us know what you conclude.

I'll ask the article editor
Hi Mound... I'll ask the editor of that article to see if she has any thoughts. Thanks, Gina, FineWoodworking.com
been there...
In my experience, it is almost impossible to get rid of the ply lines on the edge of painted plywood. Even if you fill them or paint them thick enough that they disappear now, they are likely to show again in about a year or so. MDF would be a better choice but solid wood (clear pine, poplar, birch, aspen, or mahogany) would be what I would use.
