I finished parts of a piece with an oil & wax finish before gluing up because it would have been difficult to access some spots after assembly.
I will apply some wood cauls to avoid marring during clampling. What should I use to prevent the finish from sticking to the cauls?
Thanks,
Eric

The cauls probably won't stick to that finish, but you can use wax paper or plastic sandwich bags for added protection.

You should test this first. The visqueen (polyethylene sandwich bags) might leave a different sheen on the finish where it is clamped because of how smooth visqueen is.
It also depends on what you used for finish. Some finishes don't completely cure for a long time, and even that will depend on your technique. With lacquer it is no problem. With polyurethane it may be a different story.

Hal,Well, you may be right, but he mentioned an oil/wax finish. In all probability, if there were a noticeable effect to the surface, a little buffing with a soft cloth, or addditonal finish application would take care of that.Rich
Rich,
You are right. I guess I didn't read the question well enough. I think it was about 3 minutes past my bedtime.

Gentlemen,Thank you all for your help. Wax paper it is then.Eric
Hey, Eric,
There is another technique that works really well for almost any clamping task.
Rather than using wood cauls, use 3/4" melamine for the cauls. It is really solid, does not stick to most wood glues, and is harder than most wood cauls. After use, even if they get glue on them, they can be cleaned and used over and over.
Do not use melamine for epoxy though, as the epoxy will stick to it.

I also like wax paper. Just remember to check where you are gluing is free from finish.
