Clarification on a ‘slotted tenon’ or like a dado with another piece of wood sitting in it? Building a chest.
I want to build a chest. I have a bunch of boards and some plywood. It’ll double to hold some stuff and as a table to hold a drink or a notebook here or there. Nothing serious, only used by 1-2 people. As in it’s not a high traffic, 5 or 6 people dinner table or something.
I was thinking of just cutting a straight groove/tenon/dado into the base and letting it sit in there. I know it might not be the super most sturdy structurally but it really doesn’t have to be. I figure the box part will mostly keep things together. I basically need the bottom to not fall out. I see a lot of chests built with legs but this one will not have legs and just sit on its base.

So you're going to have the bottom captured in a groove that runs around the perimeter of the chest?
If so, it should work fine. If the bottom is solid wood, you'll need to leave room for it to expand and contract. But if it's plywood, go for it and glue in the entire perimeter making it super strong.
Good luck!
duuuuuude Ben Strano replied to me. So. f'en. cool. love ya on the pod.

best,
Matt
