I would appreciate any suggestions for the following problem.
I have a oak stair handrail and banister that has never been finnished. The problem is that it has been in place for many years and has a hand rubbed finish of dirt. I would like to clean this and apply a wipe-on poly finish. There is considerable detail on the banister post that does not lend itself to much sanding.
Is TSP recommended? Mineral spirits wash followed by sanding the raised grain? Is there a specific thing to stay away from?
Thx…. Ric

To answer your questions, yes, followed by yes. Make sure you use plenty of paper towels with the mineral spirits so you are not smearing around any oils, but are removing them.
Thanks again!
Why not try just MS using a terry cloth towel to really sort of scrub and then the papertowels. Might have a lot less sanding.
Thanks Gretchen, I like that idea and if it doesn't get it all I'll think I'll try a 3M pad with MS.
Thx... Ric
