I’m building a workbench and need to make through mortises about 7″ tall by 1″ wide by 3″ deep. I started by using a 1″ forstner bit on the drill press to clean out most of the material, but am still left with quite a bit of cleaning up. Would you recommend that I get out the sharp chisels and spend an afternoon hacking away, or that I try to set up a contraption with the router table and do half from each side, possibly chiseling out a small amount that can’t be reached from either? Whatever is easiest and will result in the best joint is what I have in mind – I have no philosophy of mortises.

By the time you made the jig you could have cleaned it up with a chisel.
