I am try to decide on a clear finish for kitchen cabinets that have been painted with a butter milk colored milk paint. The milk paint was choosen for it’s rustic character that gives the cabinets an antique appearance. On previous projects I’ve used oil mixtures as a finish over the milk paint, however, this does not provide sufficient protection for a kitchen. The milk paint manufacturer recommends a water-based polyurethane product called “Stays Clear” by Benjamin Moore. The fast dry low fumes nature of water-based is nice since I have to finish the cabinets in the kitchen and a solvent-based would stink-up my house. I have a Wagner 2900 HVLP sprayer that I will likely use to spray the finish. Does anyone have any advice or words of wisdom on the finish material or application method?

Use the waterborn acrylic topcoat sold by the Old Fashioned Milk Paint Company specifically for the purpose you described.
