I’m making a piece of funiture to match an existing piece that was bought. The bought piece of funiture is a dinning room table made from Tiger Maple and has a clear coat finish. I’m building a side table to go with it. I’m looking for a clear finish to apply. Keep in mind I don’t have spray equipment, and won’t be getting any, any time soon. So my choices are narrowed down to hand or brush application. So any finish suggestions?

Hi,
If the other finish has a hand-rubbed look, you could use a product such as Min-wax Wipe-on gloss. If the finish is more of a clear, hi-gloss, Deft lacquer is designed to be brushed and flows very well and eliminate most brush strokes. You can also use shellac, either brushed or rubbed, french style.

Since it is a table I suggest a varnish finish for durability. A wipe on varnish made by diluting varnish 50/50 with mineral spirits is a wipe on finish. Wipe on 6-8 coats for the top--perhaps 6 for the sides. I recommend a non-poly varnish for a lovely depth of feeling of the finish. Can be satin or gloss, depending on the other finish you are trying to match.
Hello Stubert,
A wipe on varnish as Gretchen mentions is easy and results in a nice film finish. Might I also suggest finishes in a spray can. I've had great success over the years with spray cans - especially when working on site and I could not bring heavy equipment to the job.
Regards,
SA
