Bob, I saw your craftman style blanket chest at the springfield woodworking show. What did you use to finish the birdseye maple? Were the panels finished before they were assembled in the rails and stiles? Were the rails and stiles stained or dyed before the clear finish was applied?

I used Watco wiping polyurethane for that piece (and most all tiger maple pieces I make) The man-made urethane resin does not yellow or "amber" as much as the natural resins found in other wiping varnishes such as Waterlox. I see no difference at all between those two finishes when used on darker woods like cherry and walnut.
I did put one coat of finish on the outside of the panels and two coats of wax on the inside of the panels before assembly (mainly to keep things cleaner during handling). The cherry parts are the same Watco wiping varnish as the panels and it was all finished at the same time after assembly.
