Thanks for all of the previous advice.
I am ready to make my next handplane purchase. I am searching for a No. 5 Jack Plane. Down to the Clifton and Lie-Nielsen. Is there a significant difference between the two (other than $30). I have read in one place that the Clifton blade is thicker–is this true? is this important?
I am not sure if the endorsement of one over the other is allowed in the forum, but if so I’m listening. If not, any advice on the differences would be helpful.

As you say endorsements are not allowed. I have; however, used both planes and reviewed the Clifton for Fine Woodworking Magazine. I would put them at dead even. The difference in blade thickness is unimportant. Both are copies of the Stanley Bedrock which Stanly stopped making in 1943. The Clifton retains a rounded cheek (while both the Bedrock and the Lie-Nielsen have squared cheeks). I think Clifton did this to differentiate themselves from the rest of the pack--especially Lie-Nielsen.
