Have framed in a closet for winter/summer clothing and was wondering if any of the clever readers of this site could offer solutions (see inexpensive) for the 6ft door opening I’ve got…..am tired of the bifold bla-blas at Lowes. Am leaning toward sliders but havnt solved the track trick with any success. Thanks…JustCurious

The track can be mounted above, where the door hangs, or buried below the floor so as not to make a trip hazard.
In my home, I am buying or building two outswinging 6 panel pine doors for a closet- they look so much better.
JKPLN...Thanks, sounds adventurous, but certainly beautiful...Lightfoot
In the simplist of hardware the track is mounted to the head jamb and then most builders use a piece of base moulding or other type to hide the track.
The guide is mounted to the floor.
Fairly simple to install and if you made the opening to accomodate a jamb with casing like the rest of the regular swinging doors in the house, the by-pass doors don't look too bad. Can't stand the drywall wrap with by-pass doors. Looks cheap.
The cost difference is usually not too much between by-pass doors and regular swinging doors. However the swinging doors are a little fussy if you are not used to installing doors.
If it were my house I would use the swinging doors. Just a bias I suppose. After 10 years as a finish carpenter I have seen my share of by-pass doors that do not hold up. This is mostly due to cheap hardware and/or abusive conditions.

JP...many thanks...will keep this info in mind. Was fishing for a homebuilt hardwood track system, but as I type this I think maybe this is not the most efficient use of time, and material. Again, thanks...Lightfoot

My mother came up for a visit the other day to look after the kids while I was at work and wife was in Brisbane. I was briefing the kids on looking after 'gran' with tea and an evening drink. when I started to mention the drink, my 10yr old son (a great fan of CAPT Jack Sparrow) said 'hide the rum'. My mother thought this a great joke when told.
