I was wondering if I could put a few coats of varnish over the 4 coats of Minwax Wipe On Poly that I have already applied on a redwood bar top. The redwood continues to soak in many places and I was hoping to get a smoother finish than what I have gotten. Any suggestions otherwise? My concern is that the finishes won’t agree with one another and I’ll mess up a really nice looking piece.
Thanks,
Larry

Goathead one place, Larry in another. Oh well.
As I said on the other forum, you can put a brushing poly varnish over a wipe on poly varnish. They are virtually identical products. The wipe on is just thinned about 50% so it can be wiped on. But, it's the same stuff.
Howie, thank you times two. I just left the other forum and read your reply. It's been roughly 48 hours since the last coat and I'm going to varnish tonight. Thanks again.Larry Goates

As Howard has said, you can. But you could just continue with the wipe on. Four coats aren't nearly enough for a total finish application.Gretchen
You are so smart... I agree fully..But then again I can make almost perfect joints BUT Finishin' is another thing..Maybe in my next life...
Thanks for the reply. I went ahead and brushed a coat of varnish last night but if I hadn't any guess on how many coats I would have been looking at? The funny thing is that I'm in no hurry to complete this project. As much as anything I'm trying to learn. In regards to the coat I applied last night. I thinned the varnish with about 10% mineral spirits and I got a nice flow. It appears as though I haven't screwed it all up anyway. It seemed as though with more mineral spirits I could have wiped it on. I'm considering doing this with the upcoming barstools. Suggestions? Thanks.Larry
Eight coats is usually a good amount. The reason for a wipe on is to keep it smooth, quick drying, nib-free. Why brush.Gretchen
I use the spray can varnish for the 'final' coat... Wipe the others.I spray back a bit so just sort of sputters on there... Well, back a bit so it will never get enough to run/drip..Seems to work... For me..
