I have a construction problem. A friend of mine would like to have me make a coffee table/chest for his livingroom. No problem so far. He wants to have the top lift up and move towards his guests sitting on the sofa so thay can eat from it. This is the problem. It will have to lock in position to be stable enough.
Does anyone know of hardware for such a hinging operation or do I have to create it from scratch??

Bill,
It's not really difficult. - .
One of our multitude of lifestyle shows here showed someone building what you could be looking for. A hinged tabletop that worked like a tacklebox lid, so that the coffee table was dual height, also serving as a desk/TV table.
it would be on one of the following two websites, http://www.bhg.com.au or http://www.letsdoit.com.au
Look through the projects completed in the last 6 weeks - you'll find it in there.
If I get a chance, I'll locate it myself and post in the spot below, but if not, it was something very recently covered.

I am fairly certain I saw something like that in a recent Rockler catalog.
Here's the link to the Rockler item:

I repair furniture for a furniture sales company. Most of the ones I've seen have a heavy counterweight secured to the underside of the base, opposite of the side you are lifting towards. Most are a solid piece of iron, about 3" square, and a foot long. I think this is a must to keep it from tipping over. Most of the hinge arrangements have a "helper" spring, similar to a garage door, to aid in lifting the top. One other thing to consider - a simple lock to keep the top securely closed.
Take a trip to a local furniture store and take a look at the mechanics and design. HDI, Magnussen, Broyhill are some of the companies that make them.
Good luck!

Looks as though their server was down yesterday.
I must admit that I don't like the style or construction of this one, but that's simply my personal preference.
If the above link doesn't work, try this one: http://letsdoit.com.au/?e=general&p=archives
Hope that this helps or gives you ideas,
