Coffee Table Plan, Asian Influence
Hello: Anyone know of a plan for a low table kind of like Japanese dinner table or coffee table. Something you could sit at on cushions. Looked on the web, found mostly mission style.
Thanks, KDM

I do not have a plan but try different't searches.. Japan/China furniture.. Asian stuff like that.. LOTS of nice stuff with pictures out there.. I doubt if you need plans unless you would want to duplicate the exact joints used.. Just sort of copy one you like using Joinery you do best and go for it!
Will: Thanks for the confidence guy but I am still a beginner. I have found lots of pictures of tables and I will probably end up picking design features from several and giving it a try after some sketching. I am thinking it should be a dark colored wood or stained dark with a slightly contrasting inner panel on the top. Is there a wood that lends itself to that or what is usual in Asian furniture?

a lot of oriental furnitue is corolred black or red and then laquer finished. I f you go that route you can use almost any decent wood - Poplar, oak..
1 - measure the board twice, 2 - cut it once, 3 - measure the space where it is supposed to go 4 - get a new board and go back to step 1

HAY NOTHING wrong with that! Just try to make it.. You may like it.. Just never tell anybody your mistakes.. They will not probably notice them!
Here's a pic of a table I did a while back--It's made of solid mahogany and is about 16"hx52" square. There is a piece of 1/4" glass set into the top.
The design is really straight-forward--nothing more than mortise and tennon joints on everything except a 1/2 lap in the center where the 2 pieces cross. The finish is several coats of Watco and wax to bring up the lustre.
You really don't need a set of plans to build a table--just get some graph paper and a ruler...You'd be suprised at what you can do if you just put your mind to it...
Good luck

Thanks, all.
Peter: Like your table, definitely looks Asian and nice clean lines that I like.
Will: On the few things I've built I see lots of mistakes but my family keeps telling me it looks fine. I want to make something where I can't see any mistakes(might take a while). Thanks again for the encouragement.

NICE! Really nice...
Bet my China Grandbabies could break it in few days
You'd be surprised at what you can do if you just put your mind to it...
I got my wife to marry me!
EDIT: I have never seen two legs in each corner of a true China table.. But then again most were lost in the revolution... Gee
But still VERY NICE... Well, I like it!

KDM,
I just finished a tour of duty in Japan and built a table a saw at a Japanese restaurant. If you widen it by about 10 inches it could easily seat 4. Dont have any diagrams but here's a pic. The top and apron are African Mahogany and the legs are Asian (Japanese) Mahogany. Hope this helps.

Here is a pic of some chairs I saw in China this year......
Well, Chairs... but the base would make a nice low table...
Sorry if the file is to big... EDIT: I left it big so you could see the details
