Can’t seem to find an answer to this. Can I tint Johnson’s Paste Wax with transtint liquid dye? This dye can be dissolved in water or alcohol per label. Will it be compatible with the wax’s solvent which i believe is mineral spirits. Jeff Jewitt’s book says to use powdered dye or oil soluble dye but thats not what i have on hand. John

It you are a subscriber, go to the Ask the Experts section and ask Peter Gedrys (if he diesn't see this post here). He just did the FWW cover story on wax.

No, your dye won't work Jewitt is right.
Solvent based stains will tint paste wax with fine results. Actually, it's the pigment that settles to the bottom of the can of solvent based stain that you're after. Dig it out and fold it into your wax. Samples done on scrap are a must.
I'm refering to transtint liquid dye, not solvent based stain, per se. However,I agree, solvent based stain would work; I may resort to it. Thanks, John
Beachfarm has it about right -- pigmented oil-based stains have, umm, pigment and lots of mineral spirits.Gedrys uses dry pigments or oil-based colors (pigments in oil) http://www.taunton.com/finewoodworking/SkillsAndTechniques/SkillsAndTechniquesArticle.aspx?id=28733I can't say with certainty, but I believe some shoe polishes have silicone in them -- very bad for repairs and refinishing.

Try adding some paste shoe polish. It readily blends with paste wax if warmed first. Shoe polish is made from the wax that's removed from shellac.
