If i stain cherry with a lighter tan coloured stain can i expect the colour of the cherry to darken with time. Any thoughts or insights would be appreciated.

Yes, it will darken, do you want it to darken ?Myself, I leave it aux-natural and let nature do the coloring, you can not compete with the results. I do clear coat with Deft-semi-gloss--good luck
ivan ,
I would agree with Vern , no matter what color you make the cherry , it will darken in time . I am under the belief that the darkening or mellowing that occurs with cherry is UV related to some extent .The late Jon Arno wrote some wonderful articles specifically on Cherry one such article was in a recent issue of Fine Woodworking sometime within the last year if I recall correctly .
good luck dusty
Thanks for both your replies. Maybe I will just clear coat like you suggested. Any idea on how long it takes for cherry to reach its final colour.

Maybe almost there in a hundred years.
Cherry continues to change indefinitely. However, it reaches a rich tan in weeks, especially if you put it in the sun for a "suntan" to get it started. You will continue to notice the change for the first few years, but the change becomes more and more gradual. ________________________Charlie Plesums Austin, Texashttp://www.plesums.com/wood
I guess the general consensus is that cherry will darken regardless. I'll keep this in mind. I admire the furniture you made, it is easy to tell that it is of a high quality workmanship. Hopefully some day my furniture making will improve to your level. All the best Ivan
