I want to trim my porch columns out like the picture below. Nothing fancy, but due to lack of experience in this area I can’t seem to come to come up with a rock-solid approach for doing that crown (represented by the arows). Can you guys offer an approach? How you may go about doing it?
Thanks

Sailfish,
Chippendale's book " A gentleman and Cabinet Makers Directory" has nice pictures that show the details of the different columns. If you have a couple of hours to spend, you can read through his calculations for the proportions of all the components of the columns, capitals, base etc. This stufff sounds really pendantic, but if you aren't close, things don't look quite right.
I'd consider turning the moulding you want and cutting the center out.
Frank
Thanks biscardi.
i'm slowly learning there is more to finsihing a column then just wrapping some wood around it. It's actually an art form!
I'll check out the local bookstore for your recommendation.
