Combination belt/disk sandering machines
I’ve been looking at several models of stationary belt/disk sanding centers. Apparently Powermatic does not manufacture a belt/disk sanding machine anymore, similar to their model 30 and 31. Since Powermatic was purchased by Jet, I’ve been looking at Jet’s machine, and have seen a few in service at local cabinet shops. It looks like a good solid piece of equipment. The Jet however does not have an separate belt driven motor, like Delta’s upper-end model, making motor replacment easy if it burns out. Delta’s machine, (the $1,200.00 plus model with enclosed base) is a great machine, which similar to their Unisaw, has been in production for many years, I have looked at General’s sanding centers also. The Delta is the one I really want, but it is the priciest. I’m looking for suggestions, comments and advantages and drawbacks to any of these machines.
Thanks,
Eric

I have the Delta, use it primarily for grinding steel, so I abuse it regularly. It just keeps on going. Mine is at least 10 years old now. I would consider the adjustments for leveling the tables in a new purchase. That is the place where most of your frustration may be focused should you get a poor system. My machine is oK in this regard, but the newer models may be different.
I've got the delta model 31-460. It works. I wouldn't consider it great. It does what I need it to do and fits in my shop. For me, it's perfect.Steve - in Northern California
I own a large beltsander without any noticable brand on it. It has a two speed motor and that is great. The high speed is removing wood so fast that for a lot of work it is risky. Than I swith to the low speed (25%) and the sander is tamed and I can sand wihout stressing my nerves.

The general 100 looks like a solid machine at almost 600 #'s. this one's made in canada, and probably expensive, but if it's anything like their other machines it would be well worth it. was this the model you looked at? although i don't own this machine, in my experiece with other general machines the quality and performance are excellent, and i would suspect that their sander would be no different.
Thanks for the reply Andrew. To tell you the truth, I never even spotted that model on their web site. I was looking at the 2 that General International makes in their oversea plant. The model 100 looks very solid, its nice to see a woodworking machine with a lifting eye. I'm curious about the price tag. Thanks again, Eric
