Hi,
I just finished building a small oak shelf. I was going to stain it with Minwax natural color stain. My wife wants it to be a little darker so I picked up some Minwax golden oak stain. Well, I don’t particularly like the golden oak color (I want it to match our oak floors) so on the first coat I used the natural. I was thinking to compromise, for the second coat I might use a light coat of the golden oak and then wipe it off immediately. The third coat will be the natural color. By adding a small amout of the golden oak, the wood will be slightly darker. I was curious what people thought about this plan.
The natural color that is slightly darker is the color I’m shooting for. Does a light coat of golden oak (which is then wiped off immediately) sound like a good plan?
This way everyone is happy 😉

your three step staining plan is about two steps too long, especially with such light colours. Mix the stains in a margarine container until you get the desired depth of colour, then apply it all in one coat.
As it contains oil, a stain will protect wood to some degree, but at this stage it would really still be considered raw wood - it would need a finish over top of it.
Nic,
Mix in a container, as was suggested, and take three samples of the wood. Apply to all three samples, on one side only, all at once and leave on for various lengths of time...5,10,15 mins....see the difference. I suspect you'll find it is still not dark enough and you need to put more stain in your container and repeat the test. I used a little antique cherry with my golden oak to get the look I wanted....but Minwax has changed its colors from 25 years ago....
