I am making a cabinet for tools, and I want the door to have some depth, maybe about 3″ so I can hang tools on it. I’m not using plywood, so I plan to dovetail the frame. My question is: is there any problem cutting a groove for a panel so close to the dovetails? I guess I would try to place the groove far enough away from the edge to avoid the half pins at the front of the frame.
If I can get this to work, here’s a drawing.

DavidDodd,
There is no problem, usually route out the grove close and finish up with a chisel. How thick will your panel be?
David,
No problem. The only caveat is that with thru dovetails, the groove on the tail pieces will either need to be stopped near the ends, so it won't show, or be plugged after assembly, (if appearance is an issue). If the frame is half-blind dovetailed, then this isn't an issue (if the groove is placed between pins).
