I have in my “inventory” oil based stains, solvent based gel stains and water based stains. I also have and frequently use shellac, brush-on laquer, tung oil, boiled linseed oil and water based polyurethane. What I don’t have a good handle on is what top coats are compatible with what underlying stains; or does it make any difference at all?
Can someone give me a clue as to whether I should even be concerned or, if I should, what goes with what?
Many thanks.

I'll give it a try. Shellac goes over and under just about anything. Lacquer will stick to just about any stain or oil as long as fully cured, but I wouldn't try to top coat it with anything else. W/B poly will stick to fully cured oil base stain and tints and dyes as well. It will not stick to oil, at least not BLO. I like to use oil to pop figure and I like W/B poly (Enduropoly) for top coats, so I use dewaxed shellac as barrier coat in between after letting thinned BLO cure for a week.

The more things change ...
We trained hard, but it seemed that every time we were beginning to form up into teams, we would be reorganized. I was to learn later in life that we tend to meet any new situation by reorganizing; and a wonderful method it can be for creating the illusion of progress while producing confusion, inefficiency, and demoralization.

Thanks. That's exactly what I was looking for.
