compound angles and steam/boil bending
Hello,
Im fairly new to woodworking, so im probably going to be posting questions frequently.
one of which being, im making a tea tray and all four side walls for the tray are at a 30 degree angle outward. im also doing a 45 degree angle where the side walls meet. ive taken quite a few drafting classes, but i dont think i ever learned (or remember) how to calculate what im only able to describe as a “compound angle”. is there a simple formula for this and i am just over thinking it? i hope that was enough of a description. thanks for any replies,

Here is a link to a calculator. Whenever I have a problem figuring something out, I draw the project out to full size, a front and top view generally provides enough information. It also is something you can hold your work pieces to for verification.

Compound angle miter saw

Lay the piece flat on a compound angle miter saw. Tilt the saw 45 degrees off of the vertical and turn the bed of the saw 30 degrees to the left or right depending on which side of the joint you are cutting. Hope this helps. (you could also stand the piece up on its thin side with the large flat side facing you and swap the angles and it would produce the same outcome). I am also a Furniture Design student over at Northern Michigan University and I can understand the confusion when trying to learn all of this stuff for the first time. Have fun with the tray (Since you posted this about two months ago it is probably done by now but maybe this will help for future projects)
