I have the Porter Cable c 3151 compressor . Its rated at 6scfm at 90psi and 7.8 at 40 psi It has a 4.5 gal tank. rated at 3.5 HP peak and 1.6 running.
I am trying to decide if I want to get into spraying . I have checked other compressors in one other store. and for $300-$400 they have an even lower psi then the Porter Cable. The only difference is they had a 27 and 30 gal tank.
Would this Porter Cable be able handle spraying? I am just a weekend woodworker I would not be spraying anything too big at this time . I would probably use it for Lacquers,Varnishes and Shellac and maybe Water based if I get into that. No paints
What guns would work with this compressor if any? Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Rwayne,
Your compressor is a little small for spraying. If you are planning on spending some money, I would strongly suggest you consider an entry level HVLP sprayer.
You don't have to worry about moisture in the lines or burning out your compressor.
Start by doing a little research on line. You can pick up a nice unit for what you would be spending on the compressor.
I don't remember exactly but I think someone wrote an article not that long ago on spraying. It was probably Jeff Jewitt.
Try contacting Matt Berger and see if he can direct you to his article.

Thanks for your reply Are you talking about a Turbine unit- or a hvlp gun with a low air scfm. I've read where some call a gun under 6scfm a LVLP.Is this what you are referring too. Thanks for the inforamtion.
Rwayne,
Yes, I was referring to a turbine unit Both would be turbine units. A small two stage or three stage unit would be fine. Stages are just the number or fans. Think ahead though and get the best unit you can afford because as your skills grow you so will the quality of your finishes.
