Time to upgrade from XP + Vista – I’ve had two computers previously – both Gateway – presently a core 2 quad with vista – dual burners single hard drive. I’m looking at the new gateway i7 DX4850 and considering adding a second internal hard drive for programs only. The FX is more for gaming ( which I don’t do) but maybe worth it for overall use ? Not sure ? I like intel and nvidia –
Uses: e-mail, word, acrobat – excel – photo shop – publisher – internet – home business uses – etc.
Any thoughts, suggestions appreciated –
Thanks,
SA

Have had two other desk tops both from the same company.
Bought my first one used in 1990. Still works great !
I have used those other funny things you mentioned at work. Nah dude nah
I am sure you see a pattern here.
A few years ago these guys said Windows runs faster on the above than on the Nah dudes. PCMAG seems still pretty pleased . .

In the pic is my mini and one of the drives. That is a fountain pen on top of it for an idea of scale. There is another 1TB Firewire drive off to the left off screen.
I was posting from the Air but am now pulling up a couple of photos off the mini using my television screen as the monitor.
Life is good.
I am pretty darn excited about the track pad and
Wireless key board as well. Seriously great stuff.
I use the wireless keyboard and track pad to drive the Mini on the TV from clear across the room. Yah there is a command to blow up the tool bar gigantic if you need to. It is :
Hold down OPTION and COMMAND keys and slide two fingers up the track pad.
You gotta love it !

I've had good luck with HP computers over the years, working from the premise that they are among the least likely to go belly-up.
I am sorry to get in the middle of your conversation. I am in search of a little advice. I was cleaning out the attic at my grandparents house when I found some chairs. They were covered in dust but when i cleaned them I see that they say the bartley collection ltd and something about the henry ford museum on the bottom of them. There are two with arm rests and 4 without I was wondering if they were antique and where I would go to find out.
Hey this computer stuff is 'important"
If you want to talk furniture and woodworking go find one of those forums.
Oh
Wait
I mean
Sounds like those chairs aren't exactly kindling
Could I borrow them for a few years to "study" them. I promise to give'em back.
: )

Ooooops
Ikramme,
Hey you're serious aren't you ? I just looked at your profile and you joined today.
Sorry, sorry, sorry
I thought you were one of the old timers here telling me to get back to talking about wood and furniture. I was just kidding around
Welcome aboard !
You would be best served by starting your own thread and title it something about what you mentioned before. Look for your name at the upper left on this screen and click on "Post New"
Then when you chose a forum in the "select a forum" you could select "General Discussion" because it gets the most exposure I would guess.
Yeah, skip Vista (no good) and get Windows 7......Seriously… or get a Mac and run both Windows and OSX

Thanks for your thoughts - you know it's what you get used to. I started with MS and not really looking to be re-schooled with Mac but I have heard many good things about Mac and guessing it is superior in some ways as roc mentions. The thing that MS offers is being able to run other programs without too many issues. Vista has behaved for me - no complaints.
Today however I hear that MS is coming out with Windows 8 soon - thinking I may wait to see when the release is - and yes roc - I'm staying with MS - sorry about that. Anyway roc - I noticed the table slab in your photo and the difficultly it must have been to take that picture with your hands on the keyboard ! The finish isn't bad either - what kind of wood is that top? Is it APPLE wood ? -
Regards,
SA
To anyone who cares Apple stores have classes for converting. They even load all your old files onto your new Apple.
Classes are free I believe.
Table is bubinga. I know; rare, endangered we splurged once for our dining table and will not make a habit of buying more.
The finish is a secret combination I worked on and off all winter many years ago to come up with. Basically it is Maloof, an in "the wood" finish, with garnet shellac over it. Applied in a half fass french polish. The actual result was only good enough. Looks good from a distance or in candle light. Some day I may plane it off and do the same exact finish with more skill to get an even better result.
Bubinga is such a magical wood for me. Blacks, reds, golds. Under a microscope there is even emerald green grains of something next to ruby red grains. Sap? Minerals ? I don't know.
If you use this combo you won't get out of the wood all there is to get. There is a depth and blood red veins that my secret steps bring out. I added no dyes or colors other than the shellac and that almost detracts in some ways.
Thanks for your interest.
>difficultly it must have been to take that picture with your hands on the keyboard<
Well actually I grew a third arm to help me be more competitive at my ski boxing.

See the Douglas Adams books for further elaboration. DANGER if you hang out with Zaphod under no circumstance let him talk you into drinking more than one pan galactic gargle blaster. It is the equivalent of having your brains smashed out by a lemon slice wrapped around a large gold brick.
Take care and give those Macs a serious investigation or be doomed to too much fiddling with computers to get things done.
(unless you like fiddling then that's all right then)
Bubinga - yes - good looking wood for sure. Once made a couple of baby rattles out of it. Raffan style with the loose rings. Didn't allow the children to chew on them but they polished up well. Lots of orange dust all over my lathe anyway.
Roc if you would be so kind as to show the legs or base for that table - and no more trick photography or was that last image altered with MS operating system and the photoshop program ?
Are you saying that Mac can also copy your programs ? Whatever I go to (new computer) I'm told that a clean install of your programs is better then a transfer ?
Regards,
SA
I get a lot of my computer info from
http://twit.tv/mbw
These guys use both and talk about both. For the home internet surfer and even pro artist I think the Mac is the way to go. For running factories and rocket trajectories then the other guys may be the way to go.
> orange dust<
Hmm sounds like cocobolo. Did it smell like roses ? Not kidding; coco smells like roses. Oh well no matter. Taking us toward a rat hole.
Programs:
Mac will come with its own latest programs for free.
Your old programs if not the same should be installed using your system/program discs. Take those along to Apple store.
Your data/work files will go directly on from your old computer or your back up discs.
If you need to run Windows and or other "nonMac" stuff then they will show you how to open BootCamp or Parallels which are programs that allow you to run about any thing you can think of either alone or in combination with the Mac programs.
Do you realize about all the movies you watch these days are edited on Macs and often on Mac laptops ! ! ! !
No small task for a "home" computer.
I tried to post this before and the spam filter kept tossing me out so I will mention it again :
To back up a movie purchased on line to my firewire external storage drive takes about thirty seconds for about two gigs.
The new Thunderbolt that just came out from Apple can move Ten Terabytes per second. And the new operating system to go with it is coming out soon called Lion.
Like roc said...
I strongly recommend a apple computer, i have have a pc and i now own a mac book pro, and its just such a joy over the pc. You don't need to worry about viruses, itunes works great, tells you when there are updates, its very user friendly, and by far on of my best purchases. Good luck with your decision, if you get a mac you wont be sorry.
WWDC Keynote
What just came out today from Apple. Includes a "Migration Assistant" so you can move everything yourself from PC to Mac.
