conflicting info, Delta 17-965 drill pre
December 10, 2006
Hi,
I just bought a Delta 17-965 drill press and wanted to put a keyless chuck on it. I spoke with Delta and some other people, and searched the web… I’ll skip the details except for one: Delta changed the information at their site to read that the DP has a Jacobs 33 taper (from a Jacobs 3) about a week ago, after we spoke. The keyed chuck I recieved with my DP says it is a 5/8 JT3. I also ordered a shopfox keyless JT3 chuck from Right-Tool.com, a terrible experience but not relavent to my questions.
Did I forget to say I’m a newcomer? about to retire and building a shop to do household repairs and pursue woodworking as a hobby.
I’m reluctant to stick one of the chucks (Delta or Shopfox) all of the way on ’cause I might have lots of trouble getting it off, particularly if it’s the wrong chuck for the spindle. (crossing my fingers that I have the terminology right) I have put both chucks on the spindle to the point where they meet some resistence but will still come off easily, leaving a gap of about 5/8 inch, for both of them.
Can someone who has bought a 17-965 in say.. the last year tell me if their chuck says it is a JT3?
Why don’t I ask Delta?
I did, and will again…. but they were very defensive. The person I spoke to kept putting me on hold and asking two people she identified as Rita and John the questions I asked her. Then, they changed the site to read that the correct taper is a JT33, but they sent me a JT3. The person I spoke with reluctantly identifed herself as Margaret and reluctantly identified Rita and John (“What do you wnat to know for”). This was much different then accounts I have read elsewhere on the web where people said if you needed information you could speak to a technician on the floor. On the question of reimbursement for my expenses due to wrong information posted on the Delta site, they said I could submit a claim and it would be considered, and they gave me the number for the Danaher Tool Group where I confirmed that a JT3 and a JT33 are different sizes, in spite of what I had read elsewhere on the internet.
My apologies for the long note… I’m trying to anticipate any questions. paul

From Machinery's Handbook:
JT3 is 1.21875 long, .74610 dia at small end, .8110 dia at large end.
JT33 is 1.0000 long, .5605 dia at small end, .6240 dia at large end.
It appears that a JT3 chuck could not come close to fitting a JT33 spindle while a JT33 chuck could not even begin to go over a JT3 spindle. It is not infrequent that customer service reps have no idea how to field technical questions. I suggest borrowing or buying a dial caliper, measuring them yourself, and checking them against a table of Jacobs tapers.
I have a newish 17-965, but I much prefer keyed chucks.

Thanx Cadiddlehopper, and David. I'm satisfied that both of my chucks, keyed and keyless are the correct size (Jt3) for the spindle, and the information posted on the Delta web site (JT33)is wrong. If I had it to do it all over again I would probably just stay with the keyed chuck that came with the drill press.
AS far as removing the chuck ,they sell wedges that you drive between the arbor and the chuck, Or you can do what i do is open the chuck all the way and you will se a small hole that is drilled through to the other side when the j-3 enters . either open the hole up so you can use a punch or drill and tap it through and use a bolt to drive the arbor off .
Before you mount the chuck clean the taper off with alcohal make sure that there is no oily film. If you are ever in doubt about the taper matching you can check it by coloring one side of the J-3 taper with a felt tip marker ,engage the arbor in the chuck with firm pressure and turn it a quater turn . Remove it and you should see the ink evenly distributed around arbor. If it is only smeared at one end there is something wrong .This was a prolbem with a lot of chiwan drill presses but their quality has gotten better. Chris
Thanx to everyone for their advise / help.
One last comment.. I spoke with Lisa at Delta today and confirmed that the 5/8 JT3 keyed chuck they sent me is the correct one for the 17-965 drill press, and, they asked me to complete a survey on how I was treated, which was positive.

The document in this link may be of help. The second page has the dimensions of Jacobs tapers. http://www.jacobschuck.com/pdf/Technical-Information.pdf
A JT33 taper is .624 in diameter at the large end. A JT3 taper is .811 diameter at the large end. The JT33 taper is 1.000 long while the JT3 taper is 1.219 long.
If the chuck which came with the drill press was a JT3 taper and that chuck fit the drill press properly then the the end of the spindle on the drill press is a JT3.
I don't think a JT3 chuck will fit on a JT33 spindle because the spindle would be too small.
The most recent production of that drill press may have changed from a JT3 to a JT33 taper on the spindle.
