Given that wood moves in response to changes in humidity more across the grain, how would I connect a large shaft (24″) to a solid wood top? I am thinking about restaurant tables that have a center rod, that screws or is welded to a flange and screwed to the table through the flange holes. My kitchen table is a rescue, in solid maple in several pieces fitted together. I found another base (attached).
Any thoughts on how to create something that allows the wood to move? Thanks!

Solid anchor points at the centerline of the grain and oversized or oblong holes a the other connecting points. Figue-8's everywhere. Washer head screws through slots. Lots of options. You pic shows a substrate where movement is not a concern. You are wise to consider movement for your solid material top.
Great, thanks for the info.
