Re a question to Peter that someone else might be able to answer:
I need to replace my stair treads with oak that will be finished when I put them down. To avoid nail holes in a finished tread, I would like to use construction adhesive to attach them to the stringers. Is this a good idea?
Thanks all

Hi Fussy,
Stairs aren't really our forte, but I have some personal experience with this because I recently replaced the stairs in my house and installed solid-wood treads.
The short answer is yes, construction adhesive okay to use. What you need to be concerned with is wood movement. Stair treads are usually about 8 to 10 in. wide, which means they will experience some seasonal expansion and contraction. If you spread the adhesive across the entire width of the tread, it will prevent the board from expanding and contracting, which isn't good.
I applied the adhesive to the first few inches of the the tread, then drove nails into the back. That way, the front would stay fixed in place, while the nails let the board shrink and expand a bit in back.
The ideal solution would be if you could get underneat the stairway and nail upward into the underside of the tread.
Hope that helps,

That sounds good. I can get under the stairs, so I'll give it a try.
This is the first time I've used this forum, and I must say I'm blown away. The knowledge available, and your willingness to dispense it is gratifying. I'm a beginner, but nobody has made me feel stupid (I do quite well at that myself). Just want you guys to know that you're deeply appreciated.
Thanks and Merry Christmas to you all.
Steve
