Like many, I’m spending a lot of time at my home desk. I want/need to spend some of this strange time in the workshop. I built this desk (photo attached) a few years ago out of pecan. I’m thinking it would be nice to replace the metal laptop stand with something that had one or two small drawers. I’m having a hard time deciding what wood(s) would be a nice contrast or compliment to the pecan. I’ve been thinking maple or ash. Given the small size, am I missing the opportunity to do something more interesting? I would also be open to tinting whatever finish an “unnatural” color. I just don’t want to hide my joinery work.

There is already a strong contrast between the pecan two tones so I would advise to seek for a totally different, dark tone. The pecan has some amber so I would avoid ´´brown wood’´ such as walnut , I tend to match white and browns together (maple, ash, hickory, walnut) and yellow/red together (mahogany, cherry, birch) so in your case I would consider rosewood, padauk or ebony.
Pecan offers a wide variety of colors. I like using portions of pecan that are in contrast with the major coloration of the piece. For other woods I like mahogany or maple (if it's not too white).
Curly ash would look great!
