I am new to the forum & the only complaint I have is that there isn’t enough time to read all the threads…It is such a valuable resource….
Soon, I will be starting an entertainment center for my wife constructed of red oak. I would like to provide some accents to the piece, similar to what Marko did with the Cherry console in the gallery….
Does anyone out there have an example/idea of woods that contrast well with red oak??? The piece will be stained, but will be close to the oak’s natural color……
Pictures would be awesome..Thanks…..

I did some walnut with read oak. Very small miter splines and corner posts on a a bow case. Here they are: http://www.pbase.com/durrenm/wood_shop_projects
Measure it with a micrometer, mark it with chalk, cut it with an ax.
thanks for the quick response & pix...your work on the case is awesome...
The walnut looks great with the red oak......
I guess black walnut is nice, but I prefer African Walnut. It's much darker and since you're going to stain the red oak, you might prefer a darker contrast.
Believe it or not, Rock Maple is a nice accent for oak. It doesn't stain up very well if sanded to 220, so it contrasts much lighter.
Try some stuff....you never know. I discovered quite by accident Cherry, walnut, and Bamboo make an amazing combo.....just play?
Omigod, now I'm talking to myself. - lol
Last year, I did a piece in red oak with a two tone stain and a few years ago I made a dresser for my daughter in birch with alder accents.
Hey Self! LOL
I'm gonna have to look at using oak again I see. I've strayed away from it because I got really tired of it but after looking at your projects, I may play around again. Nice looking!
Here's a strange table using cherry, african walnut, rock maple, and birch. No stains.
Love the oversize mounting bracket - especially the giant screw head & slot! Very whimsical, yet well executed.

Yo, Self - lol
Yeah, oak isn't for everyone. I find myself telling customers that the grain patterns in oak make it an "in your face" wood and isn't going to hide. If they want something to "blend", other woods are better choices.
The two tone piece is something I made just for fun last year when I had some free time and lots of scrap from another job. I planned to sell it but SWMBO nixed that plan and now it's in the family room holding up the phone and the lower part is full of her crafting books, etc. Everyone who sees it gushes about how pretty it is but I've also noticed a distinct lack of orders for a copy. - lol
I have some semi-complete plans for something similar but in redwood that would hold a couple of cases of wine. I'll build it when (if?) I ever get another round-to-it.
Neat table!! I like the look of the contrasting woods. I just made some cutting boards from some leftover birch, maple, walnut, oak, rosewood, and purpleheart. I give them to customers as Xmas presents as a way to say thanks for their business.

RACIST! Sorry I had to...
Yup Black Walnut and Oak are great together.
Consider also using wenge accents with the oak. It has a grain structure that is quite similar to the oak but the color is even darker than walnut.
DR
I use Ash and Hickory for trim with red and white oak.. However, usually stained the same color but sometimes the Ash/Hickory a little darker..
Just me though...
mahogany and maple seem to work nice together

I was going to post a couple of pictures but I suddenly can't attach files. Que es, por favor!??
If your using plywood for the panels/sides, highly figured birch plywood will go well with anything that is darker; Cherry, Walnut, Red Oak. I've used this trick for years as a contrast for utilitarian cabinets in my shop, but sometimes they end up looking so nice, I don't want to use them in the shop.
