Just looking for input on conversion varnishes for rubbed finishes. Have never used it and am hesitant to wander too far from traditional coatings.
Let me know what your experience is.
Thanks in advance

Hi Bill,
We've done some work with conversion varnish - it's great stuff for tabletops and other high traffic surfaces. My understanding is that it can only be sprayed. It's not as nice as normal varnish (not as clear) but it's harder than lacquer. It builds real quick. One coat you sand. Another and you're done. And it's made for spraying.
Hope this helps.

*Hi Bill,I did a couple of high end chess boards that I finished with conversion varnish. The finish does build fast and the result was excellent. It gives a great finish but it is not enjoyable to use. It is a 2 part mix finish with a short shelf life. It is very toxic and even with wearing full spray gear and being in a spray booth I could smell it and feel it on any exposed skin. It was very irritable for me. It's also expensive. I would only use it again on something that was going to be subject to alot of use and needed a very hard wearable finish. If you need a fast building hard finish that will wear well then go for it.
