Hello there.
I have a King 17″ bandsaw. I think it works fine. But I would like to change the guides I have now (steel discs) for cool blocks. I’ve heard nothing but good things but have never used them. I would have to machine a new guide system since the steel discs are secured to the guide system by a round stem.
Do cool blocks come in sizes bigger than 1/2″ X 1/2″? I use a 1″ blade, I would need bigger blocks to guide it.
Does anyone know of an after-market guide system that already does all of this?
Thanks for any info on this.

Hi Maple... I'm not familiar with the 'King' brand saws but most bandsaws look like they came from the same mold with only the color or a label to tell them all apart. See if an upper guide from another brand of 17" saw will fit onto the end of the guide shaft. The same with the lower guides. As for cool blocks, I've made them out of any HARD wood. Maple, Lignum Vitae, rosewood... it really doesn't matter. I've even used cloth impregnated bakelite. If the surface wears out, sand it back a bit and you're back in business.

Steve,
I haven't seen any other guide assemblies that would fit on my saw. Actually, I haven't seen any other assemblies that accept blocks. But I will try to make them from would. It's an easy alternative to try.
Thanks
Dan
I have used some 'cool' block on my small bandsaws..
I think they have a place if you use it ALOT. But if just on occasion save the money and get a case of beer for the money..
Your steel disc guides are superior to the 1/2" square rubbing block guides on lesser saws. To go to cool blocks or similar would be a step backward. To upgrade your saw, you might try Carter or some of the other aftermarket ball or roller bearing guides.
