I am building several boxes with coopered tops. The tops consist of 17 slat pieces and have been glued and shaped around the end pieces which have not been glued to the top. I have some conflicting directions on how to orient the grain on the top end pieces.
To allow for wood movement in the coopered top should the end piece grain be vertical or horizontal? I cut them vertically but if that is wrong I recutting them isn’t a problem.
Thanks

Hi,
Well the problem with a vertical end cut is strength. You have none in that piece, so it's easily split. Since it's only being held fast at one end, I think it's possible you might have some issues. Plus the fact that gluing your coopered slat down onto it produces an end grain to long grain glue joint. Not optimal.
On the other hand, running the end piece horizontally doesn't allow for wood movement in the slats.
Two options. Run your end piece horizontal for better strength first, then 1) don't glue your slats, either to each other or to the end piece, just pin them in the middle to the end piece and let them expand and contract around the pin. Or 2) run the end piece taller and cut a groove in it for the ends of the slats to fit into. They will expand and contract inside this groove and stay flat. Good luck.
Thanks for the fast response.
Option 1 & 2 are good but I dont think they will work for me since the slats are already glued to each other. The box top is 16 inches long by 6 inches wide with 17 slats. The end pieces are a semicircle on a 4 3/4 inch diameter so the top isn't that big. the slats are 5/8 inch thick. I think that no matter how I orient the end there will be some end grain gluing but vertical isn,t a good option as you mentioned.
The wood is red oak and over 9 linear inches across. Is there enough wood movement to break a glue bond on the horizontal end piece?
If there is enough movement to be a problem how about solidly pinning the center with a countersunk screw and attaching the two ends in a groved screw hole like a table top and hiding the screws?
I think I am leaning toward the screw option do you see any problems there?
Thanks
I think the screw option should be fine. Slots for the end screws will work. Good luck. Gary
