As careful as I am feeding the material into the router I occasionally mess up and ruin the cut. Would it make sense to use a fence even though I don’t have to? Or is there another method you can suggest. Thanks

Definitely use a fence. If you are ruining cuts, why do you conclude that you "don't have to" use a fence? It would certainly save you from ruining cuts.
Don: You're right. I guess I was kinda dumb. I did finish the cuts sucessfully with only two re-dos but next time I'll take your advice.
