I am adding a room and remodeling kitchen, and will be making new plastic laminate countertops. Have not done any PL work in a long time, what is the best core material for the tops, different material at sink ? I probably should post this at Breaktime as well. Thanks.

3/4 mdf, mdx, mdo or ply are the standard, with doubled perimeter or at least a doubled front edge.
"best" as in price? or strongest?
I always use MDF, but plain old particle board works too.
I don't think it's necessary, but I always brush on a coat of paint or varnish on the underside -- and particularly around the edge of the sink cut-out.

I use 3/4 " fir ply for the core with the edge doubled. To secure the laminate I double coat with solvent contact adhesive and use it to seal the cutout edges .Some times I use ABS cement to seal the cut outs.
