I’m building a light duty bench (gardening and stuff) and would like as much knee room under the top as possible. The unit has to be free standing. I’m using an old kitchen counter top, planned on making a base out of 2×4’s with 1×12 kickers to support the top. My question is how far can I cantiler the top (mdf with formica) out from the underneath supports without this thing getting tippy? Is 30% of the total width a reasonable figure? Also, how far apart can the supports be? I had hoped for 4 feet , but don’t want the top to sag. Thanks in advance for any input.

I could go out several feet if you want to. Increase the width by using iron pipe strapped under the cabinet top; or rout a channel in the bottom of the top and insert steel threaded rods into the Top, and then laminate a bottom to the top to trap the rod.

Daj, Build a 'Trestle table' and reinforce the top widest sides with angle iron screw up from bottom.Stein
