Cove panel covered with cane. Anyone done this?
A customer wants to have a new entertainment center made that matches an existing piece of cabinetry. The doors are cope and stick construction with a coved panel . The panel is covered with a basket weave material – some type of rattan cane.
Never come upon this kind of door. How would one adhear the cane to the panel? Contact cement? Would I need to laminate both sides of the panel for stability?
How does woven material take stain and finish?
Thanks for any help, guidance, etc.

staining cane
Cane does not take stain well at all !!!!!! It is hard and nonporous. You would be better off tinting some lacquer or shellac or using dark garnet shellac and spraying on the colour/finish if the colour change is necessary. IMHO cane is cane and should be left as is, and to age on its own. I haven't tried this but you may be able to soak the cane in an alcohol based dye to get some colour soaked in. ?????
