Anybody have any tricks on covering up screw holes in oak cabinets. I’ve been doing some test finishes and can’t seem to make the screw holes disappear. The oak is being dyed fruitwood, shellacked and then finished with poly. I’ve tried almost every wood repair product that claims it can be treated like wood, but the color just doesn’t match.
Thanks,
Kevin

Tapered plug cutter. Make sure to orient the plug so that the grain runs parallel to that of the surrounding wood.
Even if a filler says it is stainable, that does not mean that it will match the surrounding wood. After all, how can it? Each board is different and will accept stain differently.
The way to match something is to first stain and put on the first coat of clear finish. Now you will know what color the wood really is. Go to a paint store and get a filler that is closest to the color you need or have them mix up a match. Also, even if the color is perfect, it will still not look right unless you take the time to fine tune the color and hand draw the grain lines.
