I think I found a good deal today. I bought a 12″ craftsman table saw with a 3hp direct drive motor. The model # is113.299130. I paid $200 for it. The owner had to move to a smaller shop. He still had his powermatic saw. I am unfamiliar with this saw. It was made in 1973. It looks like a contractor saw but the motor is enclosed. Does anybody have any experience with this saw? I told my wife that I would sell my 10# craftsman contractor saw to recoup the money I spent. I also got to buy 50′ of spanish cedar 8/4 for $2.50 a foot. I didn’t tell my wife how much wood I bought, maybe she won’t notice.

Make her a beautiful blanket chest (or somthin') and then she'll notice and thank you at the same time! Don't you love those lumber finds?
How are you going to sneak the 12" blade purchases through the family bookeeping process?? Oooops.
enjoy!

Hello,
thanks for the suggestions. My wife has several jewelry boxes. The first ones I made went to her. I am trying to finish a curio cabinet for her beanie babbies.
With the knowledge you possess, shouldn't you consider a name change to "Forest Wonder Woman"?

Chuck, I leave all that name stuff to Tool Doc and Sarge, and lay claim to no more than a thimble-full of knowledge, LOL!
Do you feel like the odd-man out, not having a lathe? I don't have one either, and have been told if I don't want to buy one, don't take a stab at turning. Evidently, it's a captivating experience!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Hello,
I do have a lathe, a harbor freight that was on sale for $119 a few years ago. I started out doing pens & pencils to earn a little money by selling them to friends for xmas presents. It now has a standard nova chuck. I bought a dc variable speed 3/4 hp reversible motor (dayton) for $5.00 at a garage sale, they didn't know what they had. It does all I will need at my present skill level. I told my wife that I didn't need any more major tool purchases for a long time (months to me, years to her). I dable in a little of everything to keep myself amused. I am probably better at doing band saw boxes.
I guess that everyone wishes that they live somewhere else where there was a different species of wood native to that area. I wish I could go into the woods and find maple burl, but others might wish to live in Texas where I am and find a lot of mesquite. I have people give me trees that they cut and deliver them for a jewelry box in exchange. I have more wood than I can use for a long time, but I still want more. I have just about run of room in my 12X16 shop with a loft above. I stack what won't fit in there on a pallet and put a tarp over it.
Have a good evening,
Chuck
Oh dear, I was confusing threads. Sorry.
I periodically see lathes in the classifieds around here. Wouldn't be surprised if at some point I succumbed to the temptation.
Sounds like you have a good networking system for feeding your wood habit. Texas isn't a bad place to be if your overflow has to go outside. The driest place here (Puget Sound) is up in the woods underneath the giant Douglas firs, but it's still pretty darned wet during the winter.
I have a good-sized burl growing on a cherry tree in the yard. Have been eyeing it wondering if it should be harvested -- the "tree" is actually just a trunk that was cut to about 8' long before Nick bought the property, so no loss to cut it the rest of the way down. Next year maybe. If it shows promise as turning stock or something, maybe I'll try the barter system with it!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)

Sounds like you found a deal. I had their 12" table sawback in the late 70's but mine was only 1hp. Was a great saw, had cast extensions on the table and a pull out extension for doing large sheet goods. About the only thing I did not like to well was the fence on the thing but that could have been upgraded.
Some time in the early 80's I bought a used Uni-Saw with Biesemeyer fence setup on and sold the Craftsman for $200 to the first person that called about it.
A table saw is usless unless you have some wood to saw with it, like FG sad make your wife something nice for her and when se does see the pile after you have the saw dust on it maybe she won't notice it.
Be safe and enjoy your new tool.

Thanks for the info on the saw. I wanted to make sure it would be wise to get rid of my sears 10" contractor saw. My wife doesn't want any more boxes of furniture in the house. I would like to fill it with greene & greene style stuff, but she hates that style. Since she is the fashion police of the family, I comply, restistance is futile.
I have gone back to school in Industrial Tech in the teaching field. I want to be able to possibly keep a few kids out of a life of fast food work. I am taking a crafts course and am learning how to pour jewelry. My wife is getting a ring with peridot stones for xmas(her birthstone). I think she will like it.
