I have inhereted one of these, and decided that I’d like to learn how to use it. But so far, I think it’s the slowest, messiest sharpening method out there. Truth be know, I’m sure it’s because I don’t have a clue how to use it correctly. Hopefully someone out there has one of these and can give me some direction. I don’t have a manual, and Sears doesn’t seem to have one on-line.
I’m a hobbiest, so my knowledge of sharpening isn’t extensive, but I’ve been successfully sharpening on a carburundom stone, a couple of Arkansas stones, and some wet-dry paper on glass.
To learn this tool, I decided to hollow grind some of my plane blades. So far, I set the rest on the front so that the angle of the blade is such that the stone touches near the center of the bevel. I put a little water in the cup in the front and pour a bit on the stone to get it wet too. Turn on the machine and ease the blade into the stone. I move the blade back and forth very slowly to be sure I’m getting all of the blade evenly. I do see that it’s cutting, but very slowly. On the first blade, it took over an hour and the hollow grind isn’t all the way to the tip yet. It is very even across, so I’m pretty sure the stone is flat and square. The second one I’m trying seems to be going even slower.
I’m at a bit of a loss. If this is normal for this type of machine, at least I’d like to be able to say that I figured out how to use it. At this rate, if I was to do all 8 blades I have, it’d take at least a week full-time. I’m not sure I’m using enough water, or too much water, not enough pressure, or too much pressure, or the moon is in the wrong phase.
Any guidance or a direction to look for information would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Chuck

What is the rpm of the stone? Is there a chance that the stone could be glazed and therefore not cutting? If glazing is apossibility you might want to pick up a cheap dressing stick to remove the top layer,Regards,Ron
Sears has the manual for $2.16 here.

To dgreen:
Great find. Thanks. A second set of eyes always helps.
It's going to get ordered. To RonInOttowa:
It says the 1,200 rpm max. I wouldn't know if a wheel is glazed or not. I have a bench grinder, but all I use it for is the wire wheel and sharpening drill bits (I've had it over 20 years and the grinding wheel looks almost un-used). This doesn't look loaded up like a carborundum stone does after a while, but I'm not real sure of what I'm looking for either, it's definitely not shiny. I think I'll try finding a dressing stick and see if that helps, definitely couldn't hurt.Is this thing similar to other sharpening machines, and if so, maybe I could read up on one of them to find out how wet, how much pressure, etc. This was my step-father's, but I never saw him use it so I'm kind of guessing on how to use it. So far I'm just tickled that I was smart enough to plug it in before I started trying to use it.Chuck
Sears model numbers are always 3 digits and a period followed by the remaining string of numbers. Your model number is 146.669950. Searching any other way results in way fewer hits.

Does anybody still need a manual for this? I found one by searching with the manual's part number (2905A56). Go figure!!!
Get it here free as a pdf file: http://www.managemylife.com/mmh/lis_pdf/OWNM/L1005393.pdf
