Creating Screw Driver Clad handles (H.D. Smith Perfect Handle)
I have this (Clad?)-handle screw driver. I like to create new wooden sides for it, but it’s not easy. I’m looking for suggestions on how to go about that. I tried creating a template and carving it, but wasn’t very successful.
Any ideas?
It’s a nice screw-driver because it’s a bit wider.

Those were called Perfect Handle tools. The original company, H.D. Smith, sold screwdrivers, hammers, wrenches, drawknives, tire irons, etc. with their patented handles. Irwin made a ton of the screwdrivers later on, along with a lot of other US and foreign makers.
Focus on getting the flat wooden base to mate with the metal first. When I've done it, I then epoxied the wooden sandwich to the metal, and shaped the handles with a utility knife, belt sander, files, and sandpaper. I riveted brass bars onto the handles to finish.
The more recent versions made overseas are much rougher than the originals. You can see where the wooden scak as were belt sanded to the metal, with pretty course paper.
