I’m pitching a column to our local newspaper in the very near future and have been racking my brain for a really creative title for a weekly dynamic woodworking column.
I’m stuck on Talking Tools News. Any suggestions would be most appreciated!!

How about "Ask the Wood Butcher", "Sawdust Views", "WoodChips"
just some quick ideas...

Silver, if it's going to be a column masthead, I think you want it to be as general as possible, but still a phase that clearly defines the recurring subject matter ...How about: "WoodShop Topics"...or "In the Shop", or "Around the Shop", or "WoodShop Wisdom."
...Also, If you want to copyright it, you'll probably need a legal search...Or somebody out there might try to get you fitted for a pair of orange coveralls.
short list so far tonight:
Talking Tools News
Talking Shop
Topical Woodshop
Workshop True Grit
Adventures inWoodworking

Shavings?
Shopnews?
"Woodn't you know?"
How about the wood pile or the sawdust bin
SAWDUST WITH SILVER
I still need the height of that Unisaw fence!

Hi Sarge
Height of fence is 3". I thought I sent you a long email yesterday with info and college address. Please let me know if you don't receive it.
Sawdust with silver? hmmm...cheers

3".. Roger.. Means I won't have to build a custom shoe. Just make the proper cuts and attach Lexan..
Got your e-mail this morning. My MIS director ( the First Lady ) was making adjustments on the computer so I could eliminate a few steps to get to this forum. ??? She also said the e-mail has to go to your server and they send at various times. You know, stuff I don't get.. he..he.. Probaly had to clear customs also. The customs folks don't do anything till they run out of donuts and coffee. Ha....
Careful with students. It could be worse, I suppose. You could be teaching demolition class instead of WW.. The shoe is in progress as of to-nite..
BTW, I've never known any famous journalist before.. Grin<>

Getting board yet?
how about " Bits and Such"
I strongly recommend that you don't strain too hard for a cutsey title. What may sound clever now might make you cringe when, after 15 years, you accept your Pulitzer.
What's wrong with a glaringly obvious descriptive title: Woodworking (if your focus is broad), Woodworking Tools (if it's more narrow), or whatever it is you will be writing about?
How 'bout HOMESHOP ALMANAC ...
Benjamin
(in Arizona)
Wood grains & pains???
I like where this is going. I'm feeling brave tonight and attaching my first column and ideas for future columns.
Love to hear your suggestions for future columns...keep in mind I have a wicked sense of humour!

Six months ago it took me an hour to figure out how to post a message on this board. And I'm supposed to figure out what all that means at the end of the attachment. Ha.......... Maybe in some other lifetime.
BTW, rip shoe with hand-guard sheild almost complete. Should ride USPS Monday. Will post or e-mail confirmation of shipment. Warning: Do not under any circumstance take the U.S. flag off the side and replace with a Canadian maple leaf. This could cause a very serious international incident. We might have to start checking all ID for visitors across the border.. Grin<--->

Sounds great, Sarge and a tip of the toque to your effort!
Re attachment: I wanted a real simple name but gd computer wouldn't let me!
Re flag: Maybe I could add a maple leaf to balance it? You know, it's a Canadian thing:
the right to bear toques.
Re grip-tites:you got 'em? Any negative experience...I am considering buying a set with the wheels.
<grinning> and bearing toque,

You can put the Canadian Maple Leaf on the left side next to the blade. I purposely put the U.S. on the right for protection. If it gets tattered, we have to burn it according to flag etiquette and replace. Don't worry, I have a never-ending supply of replacements. he..he..
No, I have never experienced any problem with the GP's or heard of any. Not till Dennis posted the post from the archives. Still think there was an unknown factor that the poster didn't notice. I could be wrong. If anything comes up negative, I'm sure Dennis will advise. Jamie is installing also, so you got some very responsible people that will inform of any problem they encounter. I don't see a problem, at least at this point. It is a major safety improvement over the stock set-up..
Good luck with the column. Tool Talk is very appropriate. The more I thought about it, probaly best to keep it simple and that simply grabs anyone's attention that is interested in tools. If I saw it I would have at least checked it out.
Jamie seems very knowledge-able in these kind of matters. Probaly wise to at least give some thought to what she advised. Is this going to be in a newpaper or on the internet.
Have a good evening..

Silver, I enjoyed reading the column. Also have a few comments. I'm noticing that the "future columns" ideas are all woodworking related, but the sample column you provide has little to do with woodworking. I'm thinking that this will not work to your advantage. You'll want to hook all the woodworkers on your first column, and the Leatherman column isn't as likely to do that as some of the other topics you've considered.
I'm a compulsive editor, so a couple of editing notes: Leatherman should be capitalized throughout, as should "Wave" (or "The Wave" whichever is the official name of that product), and "Knife" in Swiss Army Knife. There are a few other nitpicky things I could mention, but won't lest someone threaten to put me on medication, LOL.
Have fun with it!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
You nailed that one, forest girl.
You're right on. In the spring I was doing a weekly radio column called Talking Tools for our local CBC station and this is a column I wrote for that because I'm hoping to resume that shortly.
I've been aspiring for the local paper for quite a while, trying to get up to speed. The local paper recently started a column called Houseworks by Steve Maxwell, technical editor of Canadian Home Workshop magazine. I recently decided to focus on woodworking, feeling slightly outgunned on the home improvement front. So...great idea...I'll get to work on my best ww column.
Really appreciate your feedback...because I feel outgunnned by Steve I need all the help I can get.

Good luck in your endeavor Silver. I'm envious, as I really enjoy writing myself, but it's been years since I had the opportunity to write in any kind of semi-professional way.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
What would you find fascinating in:
CONFESSIONS OF A WOOD BUTCHER
besides:Unravelling the table saw blade mystery for superior joints in dadoes, rabbets and half laps.
BTW,the writing thing is a new phenonomen for me. When I started the radio column, the producer thought my writing had merit. I had a column in our high school paper(1968) and writing is one of the things I've always wanted to do. 50 does that to you.
Like anything I do, I want to do it as well as possible...which is why I posted here for a tune up before I submit my query to the editor. Already I know I need a simple name and to focus on woodworking...as Martha would say"and that's a good thing"
cheers.

Too cute, literally. I agree with the "keep it simple and not too cute" crowd.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Personally, I like the sound of Wood Butcher Shop.
Good Luck,
Silver, is it safe to assume that most of your "audience" will be hobbyists? People who do woodworking in their spare time? How about "Weekend Woodworking"? (my apologies if this title has already shown up, I haven't re-read the thread). [Edited to make small change in suggested title]
It's simple, appeals to what I'm assuming is the vast majority of your target readers, and you'd not be self-deprecating, too cute or too wordy. So, that's my .02 worth.

Weekend Woodworking
That's good forest_girl,
It's on my short list.
Thank-you,
silver
Didn't mean to be flippant. I really thought it was good...couldn't help playing around.
Thanks to all for the suggestions...I am putting my energy into the column.

Save some energy for the column itself; I think you are straining too hard at the title.
forest-girl made a sensible suggestion. You embellishment confuses me. Warriors? Are you directing your column to military reservists, the Weekend Warriors?
Ditto.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Donald C. Brown and forest_girl,
I revised my last post...
It's my style...wicked sense of humour. I thought weekend woodworking was a great idea.
Thanks again for your help.

Week-end Woodworking gets my vote. If I had only registered.. ha
Package to be out 15:00 hrs. EST, USPS. Please confirm box # and postal code as follows:
P O Box three-niner-eight
Postal code---Papa-seven-Charlie-four-Whiskey-one
On vacation and in shop. Will check for confirm b-4 shipping. Package out at that time regardless.
Now that's how "old Warriors " talk. A place for everything. The shop is not a place for "war". It's should be a place for "peace" and "serentity". Weekend WoodWorking sounds better all the time. Simple!
A weekend WW and every spare second I get also..
