John,
John I am looking for ideas on how to modify this old crib for our first grandchild. The space between the “bars” is 3.5 inches. I measured new cribs and found the bars were 2″ apart. I believe this is a safety requirement for new cribs. Do you or anyone out there have any suggestions as to how I could modify this crib without too much change to the original piece. Safety first. Sorry about the pictures. It is still in storage.
I’m having trouble uploading pictures. It took this one. I guess it will have to do.

old cribs
It's amazing that any of us old folks ever survived our childhoods, considering the design and constructions standards back then.
Have you considered lining it with 1/4" plexiglass (with edges rounded and polished)?

Ralph,
What I think your saying is to attach a solid plexiglass sheet to all four sides on the inside. This would eliminate any spacing problem and probably only intail a few scews to attach the plexiglass.

Yep, so the entire inside, down past the mattress, is plexi, attached with screws that won't catch little fingers. It would require frequent cleaning, but it also solves the problem of the child chewing on the struts. ;-)
You'd want to check on any possible out-gassing issues, though.
I think I would add a dowel or turning in between each of the existing spindles. Don't think you will have to take anything apart. You can drill a deeper hole on the top, enough to allow the new added spindles to slide up, slip in the bottom and drop it in the bottom hole, pin and glue. Not that lining with plexiglass isn't an elegant option.
Install 4 pieces of plastic and you've essentially created a well. I think carbon dioxide exhaled by the baby would sink to the bottom and lower the oxygen content in the well. Not sure it's a good idea.

Thanks for the suggestions. Not sure just how I will proceed but all your thoughts have been helpful. Taking the time to exchange ideas is what makes this a great forum.
