I need some feedback on the mason jar spray gun. I’ve tried aerosol cans and don’t like the results at least with the polys and lacquers. It seems the cans don’t leave a smooth surface. I’ve had them spray some fairly large drops of finish besides the fine spray. Is the Critter a step or two better than the aerosols. Thanks.

Bob,
The Critter is a very crude device. It is nothing but an uncontrolled stream of air blowing across the siphon opening of the jar. It's also overpriced. The last time I looked, it was about $50 at Woodcraft.
Home Depot, by comparison, currently has a Husky spray gun/ and air brush kit containing a number of accessories and tools for cleaning at a grand total of $39! The spray gun itself is very, very good. It's a standard "high pressure low volume" unit that has 2 sets of nozzels/needle valves for heavy or light liquids, that works well at about 20-30 lbs pressure. Even a small compressor will serve well. It actually has an internal air assist pressurizing system to force finish up out of the feed jar before the siphoning action of the mixing nozzle pulls the finish out to be atomized. This reduces the amount of atomization air pressure needed resulting in a better finish film. The gun is well made and robust enough for frequent small shop use. (oh, yeah, standard Mason jars fit the gun perfectly)
The air brush is just a hobby brush, but it works well with gouache and latex as well as ink.
I have no affiliation with home depot. Just expressing my opinion.
