Mr. White: If I am careful to avoid a cross-grain situation, may I glue a decorative veneer of crotch mahogany on top of a piece of 3/4 inch mahogany without fear or expectation that inherent differences may cause a separation?
Thank you. Hadley

Hadley,
As long as the veneer is thin, 1/16" thick, or less, is the usual recommendation, you should have no problems with the veneer separating or cracking, no matter what its orientation to the substrate.
However, you may have problems with the entire glue up cupping after a gain or loss of moisture if you don't also glue a similar veneer with the same grain orientation on the back of the piece. The back veneeer wouldn't have to be figured, but it should be the same species and thickness, and be applied with the same glue, to create a balanced construction.
