Visited a friend yesterday who works for Emmerson Tool Co. He showed the the like-new Starret dial caliper that he pulled out of the trash there. Company is switching to metric, so they just threw out the “old” ones. Unfortunately, he didn’t grab an extra.

The least they could do is give it to a local auction house for a consignment sale of throw the stuff on ebay!
if it will make you feel any better, if it's anything like the big manufacturing concern a friend of mine works for, very, very little of anything with any real value doesn't get scavenged by the employees. his employer is constantly doing stuff like that- usually due to instituting the latest qc/efficiency fad (ISO9000, 9001, 9002, 5S, etc, etc) in their case. he calls me up all the time to tell what he and his model shop buddies hauled away free of charge this week. they all have well-equipped machine shops in their garages after years of pre-dumpster diving.
