Cub Scout troop in need of bird houses
I need your help! I have a troop of Cub Scouts that want to build a bird house. Does anybody have a simple plan that I could replicate the parts easily so I can introduce these fine young minds to the joys of woodworking? I have 8 eight year olds. Cost is a consideration, thanks.

Hi bones ,
Try looking for a local chapter of the Audubon society , often times they will donate the materials and plans . I am also a Scouter and have helped the Scouts many times build bird houses . My Cub is now a Boy Scout , were really having fun now. Hang in there and stick with it , make sure the Boy's have fun .Pine generally works good , go to your local lumber yard and tell them what you are doing , they generally will cut you a deal when you mention Scouts , depending on the area you are in .Another place to check is the extension service at your local community college .
good luck dusty
Use discarded cedar fencing. A simple birdhouse can be banged together with 6 rectangular pieces. Have you ever turned a passel of cub scouts loose with a bunch of hammers? You might see if you can borrow a bunch of hard hats somewhere! I would drill the nail holes, start the nails and let each boy share ONE hammer till all are nailed together. The bird houses, not the boys!

Go to http://www.nabluebirdsociety.org to get a plan for bluebird houses. A box can be made from a 4' 1"x6" board.

Kay came up with some great web links. As far as materials go, depends on your home turf I guess, but I here in the Puget Sounds, there are lots of cedar scraps free for the taking at various lumber suppliers. They have big bins that they throw their scraps in, 1st come 1st serve.

Try posting on Breaktime, iirc Boss Hog had a project involving his sons, the Scouts and bird houses and may be able to help you out.
