Any hints on how to identify the curly maple which will have the most figure on rough sawn boards? Thanks in advance for any help or advice. KGK

You'll know when you see it, believe me.
curly or fiddle back maple has a wavy grain pattern and the wavier the more pronounced the "stripes"
It can be difficult to determine whether a curly board has the very finest curl when rough sawn, but one of the best ways is to look the edges of the boards. This is the first thing that I look for when we buy figured woods for our business. I have been wrong a few times, but not to often :-)
