Does anyone here have any experience with custom laser engraving vendors? There are a lot of them out there, which makes it hard to choose one over another. I’m looking for the ability to do one-off engraving of custom designs in various woods, where the piece to be engraved is typically no more than 3′ long, and the engraved area is roughly the size of a business card.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I've seen the Epilogue in action, and it is quite a unique machine. One of my customers has 3 of them set up, and it is all he does. He can download a picture of anything, and the laser engraves/etches/burns (whatever it does) the image into the wood. He also has one that works on ceramic tiles, etc....
I was quite impressed. I made a custom stable door for a horse lover nearby, and he had the horse's bust picture engraved right into the door, about 3' X 3'. It was quite impressive.

I believe that Nancy Laird over on the Sawmill Creek forums does laser engraving. She'd be the first person I'd check with. If you aren't a member over there, it's a nice group, IMHO. Google: D&N Specialties, Rio Rancho, New Mexico

Hello Steve, I have not had this company do anything for me yet, but they look ok and the proces seem reasonable.

I don't know what all Kay can do, but I would highly recommend you check with Kay Pomroy at http://www.kepomroy.com/
She does laser engraving for a lot of people. The work I have seen has been great.
If you contact her, tell her Alan referred you to her.

I used this guy once. He was absolutely terrific to deal with.

Our local woodworking club has used this guy for name tags and custom award plaques. He is also known to a lot of us because he used to work at the local hardwood dealer before he left and his laser business took off. He does both local and "mail order" business.

Thanks to all for the leads--I have plenty of research to do now.
I am going to be offline for a week. Have a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Kwaanza, solstice, etc.
And keep an eye on Mel. It looks like he may be off his meds.
