I am building the highboy in the Taunton book “In the 18th Century Style” Does anyone know a good source of custom router bits for the gooseneck molding. I have tried several listed on the web and they decline.
Please let me know as I do not want to carve these, like I did a sample, by hand.
Thanks.
Rick

You don't need custom router bits to cut a gooseneck.
You can use two or three bits to do the job on a router table, look at one of Lonnie Birds' books, there is a detailed explanation.
I do it with the CMT crown moulding set. Pretty nice set, but pretty expensive at $350. Has a cove cutter and 6 different profiled bits.

I deal a lot with tooling and custom router bits are typically $150 and up. Still interested?
Check out MCLS bits . they have a page just for that. Not the absolute best bits but work fairly well. Not to expensive
For those who fought. Freedom has a special meaning the protected never know.

I was a tooling salesman for 8 years, including custom tooling. Using several bits is very good for a small project. If you still need custom, I frequently had LRH Enterprises in Southern Calif make bits that I resold to my customers. They do a very good job, and get the indexing right. Please note though that when you sharpen a bit, your pattern changes slightly. If that is acceptable, great. If it is not, then contact Leitz Tooling or similar for custom insert carbide bits.
Well I finally found some custom bits. The Bird set was not the profile I was looking for. After receiving several email quotes, I went with Andrews Toolworks in Raleigh NC. They were well priced and delivered in less than three weeks.I'll post a msg after I try them as they just arrived today. Visually, they match the drawing I sent exactly.
LRH Enterprises in So Calif has made many custom routerbits and shaper cutters for me for resale over the years. Freeborne Tool in Spokane, WA is also excellant on custom shaper cutters.
